After weeks of spring rain, French-German artist Alexandre Dupeyron navigated the decaying corridors and broken staircases of the abandoned Wumuchong coal mine in Ningxiang, Hunan.

连绵春雨过后,法德裔艺术家亚历山大·迪佩龙穿行在湖南宁乡五亩冲废弃煤矿斑驳破旧的走廊与损毁的楼梯间。

The 43-year-old, in early March for a one-month residency, uses on-site coal and brick fragments—ground, filtered, and turned into pigments with his recipe—for works blending drawing and photography.

He calls the site “amazing,” noting his art recurring theme: people and nature.
